Meet Occupational Therapist Ariel Tucker

Occupational Therapist Ariel Tucker of Encore Rehabilitation-Cullman #EncoreRehab

When I started college, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field and serve individuals with a variety of abilities. Occupational Therapy allows me to do both of those things and I can help individuals reach their highest level of independence. I love that I can work with people of all ages and in a variety of settings.” ~ Ariel Tucker, OTR/L

Ariel received her Occupational Science and Therapy master’s degree from Grand Valley State University (Michigan) and has been with Encore Rehabilitation-Cullman for one year. She enjoys running, kayaking, baking, traveling, and exploring with her Golden Retriever, Luca. With three half-marathons under her belt, she plans to run her first full marathon soon.

We are proud to have Ariel with us at Encore Rehabilitation-Cullman! Happy National Occupational Therapy Month, Ariel!

Janet Pollard, OT – “I was born to be an Occupational Therapist”

“People ask me how I knew I wanted to be an Occupational Therapist. I tell them that I was born to be an OT. I was born with a genetic disorder called Syndactyly that affected my hands. If not surgically repaired at an early age, it would have impaired my finger growth, dexterity, and overall hand function. I spent multiple summers in the hospital having plastic surgery to reconstruct my hands. Even though I was very young, I remember the traumatic experiences such as skin grafting and suture removal. The best memories of my time in the hospital were when this lady would come to my room and do cool activities with me such as painting, coloring, and paper mache crafts. She even took me to the play room and we played air hockey. I had no idea that she was a therapist because she used “play” as therapeutic activities to get me to move my hands and perform skills that I would need to master in my future occupation.. a student in school.  The impact of my childhood experiences and the desire to help others is what led me to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy.

“One of the most fulfilling parts of my job is the opportunity to watch a patient’s view of themselves change as they progress toward independence. OT helps turn the ‘I can’t’ into ‘I’ll try’ and then ‘I did’. Occupational Therapy has allowed me to see the whole person and have a unique view on the care team. I am happy to be an educator, a coach, an advocate, and a partner for all of my patients and their families.” ~ Janet Pollard, OT

Janet is a graduate of Carbon Hill High School. She earned an Associate of Science degree from Walker College in Jasper, Alabama. She is a 1997 graduate of The University of South Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. Janet is currently employed as an occupational therapist at Encore Rehabilitation in her hometown of Winfield. She has been a clinician for twenty two years and has practiced with Encore Rehabilitation for the past four years.  At Encore Rehabilitation, Janet has the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, with diverse populations, and use creative treatment approaches.

Thank you for using your skills and talents to bless others, Janet! Happy National Occupational Therapy Month!

Encore Rehabilitation-Dothan is proud to give a shoutout to our very own Physical Therapist Bonnie Yesian on the completion of her 13th Boston Marathon Run! Way to go, Bonnie!

“I’ve been running since 1994 and started training for my first marathon in 2000. Since then I’ve completed 25 marathons along with numerous half marathons and shorter distance runs. I have now completed 13 Boston Marathons. Other races have included the New York Marathon; Chicago Marathon; California International Marathon (Sacramento); St. George Marathon; Houston Marathon; and Austin Marathon. I obviously like the sport but even more than that, I’ve loved all the extra benefits and unexpected life lessons running has taught me over the years. I’ve met the most amazing people and lifelong friends through running. I hope to continue as long as the good Lord allows me to run!” ~ Bonnie Yesian, PT

Meet Leigh Scott, M.Ed, LAT, ATC

Encore Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Leigh Scott. #EncoreRehab National Athletic Training Month gives us the opportunity to highlight our great team of Athletic Trainers. Say hello to Encore Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Leigh Money!

“Why did I become an Athletic Trainer? I initially started the Athletic Training program at Troy University because I wanted to apply for a Physical Therapy program later. After a year in the program, I enjoyed working with collegiate athletes so much that I decided to get my master’s degree. This led to a graduate assistantship at Mississippi State University and a job working with the Bulldog Volleyball team. Those two years at State are some of my most enjoyable years as an Athletic Trainer.

“I have always felt that the best part of being an Athletic Trainer is being able to work with the most dedicated group of people on Earth. To be able to assist someone who is willing to work harder than most is very satisfying. At the collegiate level, and even the high school level, I have found so much enjoyment the past 10 years in helping student athletes achieve their goals.” ~ Leigh Money, M.Ed., LAT, ATC.

We thank you, Leigh, for all you do for our athletes! Happy National Athletic Training Month!

In celebration of National Athletic Training Month, we’d like to introduce you to Encore Rehabilitation Director of Sports Medicine-South Mississippi Eric Oehms, MS, LAT, ATC!

He is the Director of Sports Medicine for Encore Rehabilitation-South Mississippi, working with a staff of 20 Athletic Trainers. He is most often providing Sports Medicine coverage for St. Patrick Catholic High School.

Eric says, “I wanted to be involved with athletics when my playing time was over. I also wanted to be involved in healthcare. Athletic Training is the best of both worlds! That is why I became an Athletic Trainer. Being around athletes who have a strong desire to do their best and to watch their coaches use various techniques to bring out the athletes’ best is one of the best things about being an Athletic Trainer. Being outside for part of my day and being paid to be at sporting events, what’s not to love about that!
