Swim for MS – 18,000 laps in one month!

A few participants in the Cullman MS Swim event: Bo Shirey, Robyn Crawford, and Ruth Ann Knight.

From guest contributor, Bo Shirey, Athletic Trainer with Encore Rehabilitation-Cullman

I love to swim and I was looking to do a swim-a-thon as a fundraiser.  I decided to do one for MS (Multiple Sclerosis) because my mother, Judy Shirey, was diagnosed over 20 years ago.  I contacted her MS doctor, Chris Laganke, MD, and I was referred to the local National MS Society chapter in Alabama.

For the MS Swim event, all the proceeds raised would be donated to the local Alabama chapter to help raise awareness and find a cure for MS.

The Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center gave me permission to use their facilities to host our event.  The event took place the entire month of January.  We had just over 20 swimmers to participate.  Our goal was to swim over 500 miles (18,000 laps) in the month of January.    We reached our goal just few days late but we had a couple of snow days and several of our swimmers had the flu.  We raised almost $4,000 for MS.

The next MS Swim event is scheduled for September 2019. We welcome others to participate and donate.

WALK MS: Cullman 2018, April 14, 2018 at Heritage Park-Cullman, Alabama

WALK MS-Cullman 2018 will take place Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Heritage Park (1705 Lee Ave SW, Cullman, AL 36055). Registration at 10 am. Walk starts at 11 am.

Why we walk~~
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. MS is different for everyone, and that makes it all the more challenging to solve. The first Walk MS event was in 1988, and since then more than $1 billion has been raised for research and programs to improve the lives of people living with MS. Today, there are treatments where there weren’t any before, and the dream of ending MS is becoming a reality. But there is still so much to do.

That’s why we’re walking. We’ve set an ambitious goal because we know with support from people like you, we will have a great chance at reaching it. The money raised will drive groundbreaking research, provide life-changing programs and guarantee a supportive community for those who need it most. This cause is important to us, so we hope you can do your part to help end MS forever.

Chinese Medical Professionals visit Encore Rehabilitation Facilities-Part 2

Encore Rehabilitation hosts tour group from China (2)

Chinese Medical Professionals tour Encore Rehabilitation-Hartselle, March 21, 2018.**

Encore Rehabilitation facilities were recently visited by medical professionals from China. China’s population is increasing and living longer which is creating a need for expanding rehabilitative care. “Western Medicine practices” such as Physical Therapy are in more of a demand. The group was touring Encore Rehabilitation clinics to learn more about the Physical Therapy profession.

One of the stops on their tour was Encore Rehabilitation-Hartselle, Alabama. The Hartselle clinic is now operating in their new clinic on Highway 31 and Mynatt Street. Services in Hartselle include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Industrial Rehab, including FCEs (Functional Capacity Evaluations). Hartselle also offers a Pediatric Rehab program called Kids in Motion.  This program specializes in the management of Autism Spectrum Disorders and offers services to assist children with behavior development, neurological conditions, and physical conditions.

Visitors enjoyed the tour and also an explanation of Dry Needling. Dry Needling is a skilled intervention that uses thin monofilament needles to penetrate the muscle and help decrease pain and spasms. Dry Needling is especially helpful in pain management. While the Chinese visitors are very familiar with acupressure, dry needling was a physical therapy procedure that was less common to them.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help Relieve Rheumatoid Arthritis

pexels-photo-339620.jpeg

There are many people who struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Here is an excerpt from the article, “10 Simple Adjustments to Relieve RA Hand Pain”, that could help you resume your daily activities that RA was keeping you from.

How an Occupational Therapist Can Help –

“According to an analysis of numerous research studies published by the Cochrane Collaboration, there’s a lot of evidence that working with an occupational therapist when you have RA can help you use your hands for everyday tasks more efficiently and with less pain. The occupational therapist’s goal is to ensure that you can participate in any activity you want while still protecting your joints and getting hand pain relief.

For starters, an occupational therapist teaches people with RA about disease self-management, Dodge says – offering instruction on joint protection techniques, how to use assistive devices, how to conserve your energy, and exercises that will help you do activities with less pain.  [They] may also explain how to use heat and cold as part of your pain management strategy.

The occupational therapist can also show you how to modify specific activities so you can still do them. For example, if you’re a woman who enjoys knitting, an occupational therapist can provide suggestions for adaptive equipment and offer techniques that allow you to enjoy your hobby more safely.”

10 Tips to Try Now

If you need hand pain relief from RA, use these suggestions from Dodge and Amini to modify activities to make them less painful:

  1. Build up handles on utensils and tools so that less force is needed to hold them while performing tasks. Pipe insulation is handy for enlarging handles.
  2. If you’re unable to lift a gallon of milk with one or both hands, buy half gallons or have someone pour half into a small pitcher.
  3. Rather than carrying bags in your hand, place straps over your forearm or shoulder. Rolling bags alleviate the need to lift and carry them.
  4. Use both hands when lifting objects, and keep your forearms close to your body.
  5. When possible, use your palms to grasp objects rather than your fingertips. Replace standard door knobs with door levers.
  6. Wear rubber gloves to enhance your grip when opening jars.
  7. Use electric appliances when possible.
  8. Use your entire body to move heavy objects rather than pushing with your hand, such as when opening a door.
  9. Use a rolling cart to move items around the house.
  10. Purchase pots and pans with two handles and slide them over surfaces instead of lifting them. Silicone sheets can be placed on delicate counter surfaces to protect them from hot pots.
