62nd North-South All-Star Football Game
MONTGOMERY – The North and South All-Star football squads have reported to Mobile and begun preparations for the 62nd annual North-South All-Star Football Classic. The game will be played for the first time at the University of South Alabama’s new Hancock Whitney Stadium Friday, December 18, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
“We are very excited to be playing this game in December and to be playing at USA’s beautiful Hancock Whitney Stadium,” said Jamie Lee, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) which hosts the annual game. Lee added, “We are also thankful for the City of Mobile, the Mobile Sports Authority and the University of South Alabama for their interest and support of one of our premiere events. We look forward to partnering with them the next three years.”
The contract is a three-year agreement including 2020, 2021 and 2022. Mobile was home to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic from 1988 to 2010.
The AHSADCA, which operates under the auspices of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) manages the AHSAA’s oldest all-star game. The North-South Classic got its start in Tuscaloosa in 1948. It was played yearly through 1984. It was discontinued from 1985-1996 and brought back in 1997 as part of the AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Sports Week. It was played at Cramton Bowl from 1997-2004, then moved to December and played at Troy University’s Veterans Stadium for two years in 2004 and 2005; moved to Alabama A&M University (2007-2010) when the AHSAA Summer Conference relocated to Huntsville due to renovations in Montgomery and was played in July. The North-South game returned to Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl when the Summer Conference returned to the Capital City in 2011 and has been played there every year since as part of All-Star Sports Week.
The 61st game was cancelled due to COVID 19 concerns this past summer. The 62nd game was scheduled to be moved to December beginning this year.
Some of the state’s top high school, college and professional football standouts have played in the North-South Game – including Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan (1968), Auburn All-America receiver Terry Beasley (1968), Green Bay Packers great Bart Starr (1952), and Alabama All-America linebacker and NFL All-Pro Cornelius Bennett grabbed MVP honors in the 1983 game. Decatur High School teammates Joe Brewer and Bobby Golden earned CO-MVP honors in the first game played in 1948.
The teams are scheduled to check in Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. North head coach Jeff Smith of Walter Wellborn High School and South head coach Earnest Hill of McGill-Toolen Catholic will conduct one practice today at 7 p.m. The North will be at the USA Jaguar Training Center and the South will be at Hancock Whitney Stadium.”
The North will be at Hancock Whitney Stadium on Wednesday for a 9 a.m. practice, and the South will be at the Jaguar Training Center. The teams will swap locations Wednesday afternoon for the scheduled 2 p.m. practice sessions. The teams will have two more practices Thursday. The game will kick off at 7 p.m., on Friday and will be televised live by WTOM TV over the AHSAA TV Network and will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network. The AHSAA Radio Network is also broadcasting the game live over its statewide radio network.
All tickets must be purchased though GOFAN at https://gofan.co/app/school/AHSAA
No paper tickets will be sold.
