Tyynismaa, Strand Finish Strong in the 20^th Jesse Owens Classic to Claim AHSAA X-C Spotlight

MONTGOMERY – AHSAA runners Ethan Strand of Vestavia Hills High School and Amaris Tyynismaa of Montgomery Catholic High School were the top finishers from the state at the prestigious 20^th annual Jesse Owens Classic cross country championships held at Oakville Indian Mounds and Museum course last weekend to share the AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight this week. The course will host the AHSAA state championships in November.
Strand, a sophomore, finished the 5,000-meter race in 15:39.90 to cross second behind senior Davis Bove of Centennial (TN). Bove won the title with a 15:32.10 time.
Defending meet champ Will Stone of Homewood was third. The Patriots senior clocked 15:52.15, 30 seconds off his 2017 winning time of 15:22.32. Scottsboro sophomore Hayden Judge was fourth overall at 15:53.43 in the field of 256 runners from around the Southeast. Huntsville, coached by Graciela Bryant, won the team title with 143 points, and Scottsboro was second at 193.
Defending champion Tyynismaa crossed the finish line in third place in the Gold Division featured race. Tyynismaa, possibly the most notable girls’ cross country runner in AHSAA history, clocked 18:00.93, which was 10 seconds off her winning time of 17:50.51 in 2017.
Junior Sasha Neglia of Dobyns-Bennett (TN) and sophomore Landri Wilcox of Cookeville (TN) finished 1-2 with times of 17:18.60 and 17:44.77, respectively. Both times fell well short of Tyynismaa’s course record 17:03 run in the AHSAA State Championships as an eighth grader in 2014.
Thompson senior McKenzie Hogue and Homewood junior Lainey Phelps crossed in fifth and sixth place with times of 18:10.05 and 18:20.74 in the field of 219 runners. Auburn juniors Samantha Rogers and Harper McGowan came in 11^th and 12^th to help the Tigers of Coach Naomi Bergh win the overall team title with 88 points. Homewood was fifth with 205 in the field of 31 teams from across the Southeast.
Fort Payne junior Maggie Crow crossed the finish line in the Silver Division race third with a time of 19:59.26 to help the Wildcats win the Silver team crown with 74 points. Forty-one teams and 286 runners competed.
Faith Academy sophomore Bailey Lansdown clocked 19:55.80 to win the Bronze Race title over runner-up Kathy Hammond of LAMP, who crossed at 19:56.32 in the field of 301 competitors. Scottsboro won the Bronze team title with 47 points and Lawrence County was second with 104.
In the boys’ Silver division race, Helena sophomore Brady Barton finished seventh with a 16:57.44 time in the field of 357 runners. Pearl (MS) won the team championship with 93 points and James Clemens was second with 145. Beauregard seniorJonathan Jenkins captured the Bronze race with a 16:32.44 time. Briarwood Christian sophomore Trent Malloy was second at 16:39.95 in the field of 478 runners. Saint John Paul II Catholic was the team champion with 72 points and Montgomery Catholic was second with 86.

GIRLS
MEGHAN SCHWARZE, ARAB: The senior clocked 19:58.93 to take first place in the 5A/7A division race at the Lake Guntersville Invitational meet. Teammate and eighth grader Grace Goslin was second clocking 21:98.422 as the Lady Knights scored 15 points to take the dominating team win. Albertville was second with 60 points.
ELIZABETH SLONE BUTLER, DAR: The Patriots’ sophomore runner beat the field of 92 runners with a time of 20:56.60 to claim the Class 1A/4A division championship of the Hay on the Run Invitational at Fairview Town Park. Ashville sophomore Meghan McCarthy was second clocking 21:14.31. St. Bernard won the team title with 45 points, and Hatton was second with 83.
BROOKE DuPLANTIER, FAIRHOPE: Was the top AHSAA runner to cross the finish line at the T.R. Miller Challenge at Brewton finishing third behind Gulf Breeze (FL) runner Lauren Jorgensen and West Florida’s Skylar Grant with a time of 22:16.00. Jorgensen won with a 19:54.55 time. UMS-Wright and Fairhope finished deadlocked in first place at 100 points each, with the Bulldogs taking first place in the tie breaker.
EVIE BELL, OAK MOUNTAIN: Clocked 13:36.78 in the Boonie Invitational two-mile event at Alabama’s Veterans Park to beat the field. The Eagles won the team title as well with 17 points. Mountain Brook was second with 44.

BOYS
SAM MOULTRIE, GUNTERSVILLE: The junior clocked 16:02.84 to win the Class 5A/7A division of Lake Guntersville Invitational meet that featured a strong field of 107 runners. Dustyn Lewis of Grissom was second with a 16:25.33 finish to lead the Tigers (33 points) to the team championship. Albertville had 52 to finish second.
KYLE SAYLOR, DAR: Won the 1A/4A division race at the Lake Guntersville Invitational hosted by Guntersville High School with a winning time of 18:01.71. Collin Mayfield of Geraldine was second at 18:05.95 in the field of 82 participants. DAR also won the team championship posting 31 points. Brindlee Mountain was second with 74.
CALEB GUTHERY, ST. BERNARD: The junior clocked 17:12.94 to nip senior Aaron Brown of Hanceville (17:20.49) to win the Hay on the Run Invitational at Fairview Town Park. The race had 141 runners. Host Fairview won the team title with 72 points. St. Bernard was second with 78.
JOSEPH PERRY, UMS-WRIGHT: The freshman clocked 17:39.59 to finish first in field of 232 runners at the T.R. Miller Challenge held at the Brewton Cross Country Course. The Bulldogs also won the team competition with 98 points.
HANSON McGOWAN, OAK MOUNTAIN: Ran the two-mile race distance at the Boonie Invitational held at Veterans Park in Alabaster in 10:51.53 to claim first place. Oak Mountain also won team competition with 15 points. Mountain Brook was second with 51.

2018 Alabama All-Star Football Roster for 32nd Alabama-Mississippi Game

40-Player Roster set for 32^nd Alabama-Mississippi Game

MONTGOMERY – Senior quarterbacks Taulia Tagovailoa of Thompson High School and Bo Nix of Pinson Valley headline the 2018 40-player All-Star roster for Alabama for the upcoming 32th annual Alabama-Mississippi Classic set to be played at Cramton Bowl on Monday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The squad was announced by Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) Director Jamie Lee. The AHSADCA, in conjunction with the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC), administers the all-star game each year. Raycom Media will be televising the game live.

Alabama holds a 22-9 edge in the series, which began in 1988 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Mississippi won last year’s game at Hattiesburg 42-7 – the largest margin of defeat for Alabama in the series history.

“We thank the selection committee for doing an outstanding job selecting this year’s team,” Lee said. “We are excited about all the players chosen, but these two quarterbacks are special.”

Both quarterbacks have had already committed to Southeastern Conference Schools. Tagovailoa has committed to the University of Alabama, where his brother Tua is currently the starting quarterback. And Nix has committed to Auburn, where his dad and head coach Patrick Nix was a quarterback from 1992-95.

The team is comprised of 40 seniors selected by the AHSADCA All-Star Selection Committee, which has been meeting and studying players nominated for several months. The team must have at least one player chosen from each of the AHSAA’s eight districts and at least one player from each of the seven AHSAA classifications. Three players may be chosen from two AHSAA member schools, but no more than two players may be selected from any other member schools. Head coach is Josh Niblett of Hoover.

Tagovailoa has compiled an 18-1 record at Thompson High School since moving to Alabaster prior to the 2017 season. He led the state in passing last season completing 287-of-435 passes attempted for 3,820 yards and 36 touchdowns. He is off to an even faster start this season with 1,991 yards passing and was ranked second in the nation heading into last week. He is 144-of-225 with 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions while leading the Warriors to a 5-0 record thus far this season. He has passed for a career-high 507 yards in one game and has thrown for more than 400 yards in two other games.

Nix is 32-2 as a starter since his sophomore season. He led Scottsboro to a 12-1 record in 2016 and guided Pinson Valley to a 15-0 season and the school’s first ever Class 6A state title last year as a junior which completing 196-of-307 passes for 2,872 yards and 35 TDs. He was named Super 7 Class 6A MVP in the finals. This season he is 82-of-156 for 1,194 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Indians (5-1). Nix has passed for 409 yards in one game.

Niblett, 197-50 overall with seven state titles to his credit, will be making his second head-coaching appearance in the All-Star Classic. He coached the Alabama team to a 21-13 win in 2009. The rest of his coaching staff includes Patrick Nix, Pinson Valley; Sam Adams, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa; Shawn Rainey, Spain Park; Pat Thompson, Sweet Water; Clifford Story, Lanett; Clinton Smith, Hillcrest-Evergreen; Steve Mask, St. Paul’s Episcopal; and Jason Kervin, Hoover High School, who will serve as the scout coach.

Alabama’s All-Star team is loaded with players already committed to play in the SEC next season. One of the highest profile players, Oxford offensive lineman and AHSAA defending Class 6A heavyweight wrestling champion Clay Webb is still uncommitted – considering offers from virtually every major college in the U.S., including Alabama and Georgia – rumored to be his top choices at this time.

Other current Auburn commitments selected include Hoover receiver George Pickens, and Hewitt-Trussville receiver JA’Varrius Woolen-Johnson. Alabama commitments include defensive back Christian Williams of Daphne; defensive lineman D.J. Dale of Clay-Chalkville; offensive linemen Pierce Quick of Hewitt-Trussville and Amari Kight of Thompson; and Hoover place-kicker Will Reichard.

Other major-college commitments are defensive back Ray Thornton of Central-Phenix City and linebacker LaVonta Bentley of Jackson-Olin (Clemson); linebacker Kendall McCallum of Oxford(LSU); linebacker Brandon Mack of Jeff Davis (Pittsburgh); defensive back Desmond James of Spanish Fort (Mississippi State); defensive lineman Daevion Davis of James Clemens (Vanderbilt); defensive lineman LaDarrius Cox of McGill-Toolen Catholic (Tennessee); defensive lineman Checardo Person of Montgomery Catholic (Indiana); defensive lineman Patrick Lucas of Wetumpka (Ole Miss); running back Amontae Faison of Central-Phenix City (Arkansas); and receiver Trikweze Bridges of Lanett (Oregon).

AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight for Week 5
McKenzie Hogue Runs Fastest Time of 2018 to Beat a Field of 292 at Scottsboro Classic
MONTGOMERY – Thompson High School senior McKenzie Hogue turned in the fastest 5,000-meter time of the 2018 AHSAA cross country season last weekend winning the prestigious Scottsboro Classic Invitational girls’ Class 5A/7A championship race with a time of 18:13.66. The impressive victory earned the Thompson runner this week’s AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight.
A field of 292 girls competed in the race held at the John R. Esslinger Trail, aptly named for the legendary former Scottsboro High School track and cross country coach who was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Hogue, who was the only runner to earn www.alabamarunners.com Golf Elite Status at the Classic, trimmed 50 seconds off her 2017 time that earned her runner-up. She captured two firsts in the Class 7A 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the 2018 AHSAA Indoor and Outdoor State Track Championships last school year as a junior and was second to McGill-Toolen Catholic senior Grace Jensen at the 2017 AHSAA Class 7A State Cross Country Championships. Hogue clocked her best overall time in that race (18:12.57) and was only a second off that time last weekend.
Junior Lily Hulsey of Mountain Brook was second at 19:03.27 and Huntsville senior Abby Weitenbeck third with a 19:04.33 finish. The Spartans won the girls’ team title in the 5A/7A division with 29 points. Homewood was second with Huntsville third with 118 points in the 25-team field.
Rogers junior Jaycee Biffle crossed the finish line in 21:28.44 to win the Class 1A/4A division title in the field of 156 runners. In all, 448 girls’ runners competed in the Scottsboro Classic.
The boys’ Class 5A/7A race that featured 441 participants came down to just three as Will Pinson of Huntsville edged Hunter Harwell of Mountain Brook and Sam Moultrie of Guntersville to win the race. Only five seconds separated the trio.Pinson, a freshman, clocked 15:52.38 and Harwell, a senior, crossed the finish line at 15:55.60. Moultrie, a junior, came in at 15:57.63.
Huntsville emerged as the team champion with 39 points. Host Scottsboro was second with 84 and Mountain Brook third with 124.
Westbrook Christian senior Mitchell Cook beat a field of 185 in the Class 1A/4A division with a winning time of 17:18.30. Raleigh Stamps of Rogers was second at 17:31.29, and Cook’s Westbrook teammate Jonah Morris third clocking 17:44.96. Pleasant Valley won the team competition with five runners finishing in the top 24. The Raiders had 71 points, Ohatchee was second with 107 and Westbrook third with 112.

GIRLS
PRESLEY MILES, SAINT JAMES: The sophomore from Montgomery clocked 18 :42.91 to win the TCBY Invitational cross country championship 1A/4A division race held at Munny Sokol Park in Tuscaloosa. American Christian senior Isabella Lovvorn was second. Cold Springs won the team title with 52 points while American Christian and Saint James tied for second with 55 points each. Fifty-nine runners and seven teams competed.
HALEY STALLWORTH, HOOVER: Captured first place in the TCBY Large-School (5A/7A) competition of 98 participants at the TCBY Invitational at Tuscaloosa’s Munny Sokol Park with a time of 21:01.23. The senior set the pace as four Bucs runners crossed in the first six finishers. Sophomore Alyssa Halcomb was second with a 21:28 .022 time. Hoover totaled 24 points to claim the team championship with Cullman second with 43 points.
SAMANTHA ROGERS, AUBURN: The junior crossed the finish line first with a winning time of 19:23.22 to win the Central Alabama Cross Country Invitational varsity girls’ race hosted by Montgomery Catholic High School at Montgomery’s Gateway Park. The Lady Tigers posted a perfect team score of 15 points placing runners in the first five finishers. Harper McGowan was second for Auburn at 19:39.02. All five girls clocked 20:00.10 or faster. Montgomery Catholic took second with 62 points. Senior Amaris Tyynismaa, who holds the all-time state record for girls’ cross country (17.03), did not compete in the field of 71 runners.
TIMBERLY TOMLIN, CENTRAL-CLAY COUNTY: Clocked 25.47.2 to finish second individually and helped the Volunteers win their own Volunteer Spirit Classic meet at Lineville. Central scored 57 points and runner-up Randolph County had 71.
BOYS
JONATHAN JENKINS, BEAUREGARD: The senior finished first at the Spencer (GA) Invitational held at Columbus (GA) with a time of 16:27.28. Teammate Joseph Perrella, a junior, was ninth with a 17:56.21 time, and Valley junior Dylan Landreth clocked 17:56.42 to finish 10^th among the field of 72 runners. Valley took third place with 98 points finishing behind Georgia schools Brookstone (38) and Harris County (66). Beauregard was fourth with 130.
EVAN ROGERS, AUBURN: Ran the 5,000-meter course at Montgomery’s Gateway Park in 16:37.24 to take first place in the field of 119 runners at the Central Alabama Cross Country Invitational hosted by:14.64) finished third and fourth, respectively, as Hoover posted 22 points. WILL COUCH, HOOVER: Beat a field of 155 runners in the 5A/7A division with a winning time of 16:53.93 to lead the Bucs to the team championship of the TCBY Invitational meet held at Tuscaloosa’s Munny Sokol Park. Teammates Drew Kilgore (17:05.27) and Lane Tincher (17Will Thompson finished second overall clocking 16:58.90 to lead the Bearcats to second place with 88 points.
ASHER DESAI, ALTAMONT: The senior helped the Knights to the TCBY Invitational 1A/4A runner-up finish with a winning time of 17:26.39. Cold Springs won the team title with 42 points and Altamont had 43. Fellow seniors James Dixon and Spencer Skidmore crossed second and third, and Cold Springs junior Seth Walker was fourth in the field of 110 runners to pace the winning Eagles.
JAYLON HUDSON, LINCOLN: Won the boys’ 5,000-meter race at the Volunteer Spirit Classic meet at Lineville with a time of 18:14.6. Lincoln posted 39 points to win the team title as well. Host Central-Clay County was second with 57 points. Top finisher for Central was Ronald Piedra in third place.

Arab Senior Megan Schwarze Wins Two Races
In 4 Days to Grab AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight

MONTGOMERY – Senior Megan Schwarze of Arab High School captured first place at two cross country meets – over a span of just four days — to grab the AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight this week.
Schwarze, who finished third in 3,200 meters and second in the 1,600 race at the AHSAA Class 5A Outdoor State Track Championships in Gulf Shores last May, won the 5A-7A Division title at the Randolph Cross Country Classic championships held Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. She also won the 5A-7A division race of the Fairview Invitational the previous Saturday, clocking 22:22.59 to finish first in a field of 67 participants.
She ran the 5,000-meter course at UAH in 19:31.5 to beat a field of 121 runners with Vestavia Hills freshmen runners Crawford West, Katy Lambert and Sarah Comer finishing in the next three spots with times of 20:19.42, 20:25.34 and 20:27.34, respectively. The Rebels swept the team competition totaling 29 points.
Running at the Cullman County race, Schwarze edged Alexandria’s Abby Nunnelly, who had a time of 20:53.13, to win the event. The Arab girls’ team, coached by her dad James Schwarze, finish second with 35 points. Cullman, the winner with 33, was paced by sophomore Bernada Tizapa and junior Della Kelly, who crossed the finish line at Fairview 3-4 with times of 21:22.15 and 21:23.34, respectively.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Ethan Strand of Vestavia Hills High School had the fastest time of the week placing first in a field of 237 runners to capture the individual Class 5A-7A championship at the Randolph Cross Country Classic held at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Strand clocked 15:38.10 over the 5,000-meter course to edge senior teammate Bryce Hutchinson, who had a time of 16:06.89. The Rebels won the team crown with 33 points.

BOYS
SILAS FRANKLIN, SMITHS STATION: Won the Enterprise Wildcat Classic held at Enterprise with a winning time of 16:32.50 for the Panthers in the featured “A” race. Evan Crawford of the host Wildcats was second at 17:05.72. Smiths Station had five runners in the top 13 of the 89-participant field to claim the team title with 35 points. Auburn was second just one point behind with 36, and Enterprise third with 51.
AARON BROWN, HANCEVILLE: Won the Class 1A-4A division of the Randolph Cross Country Classic at the University of Alabama-Huntsville with a winning time of 17:05.26. The senior edged out Hatton senior Kagen Sutton, who finished second at 17:09.59 in the race that featured 257 runners. The top 10 runners all came from different schools. DAR won the team title with 118 points.
JACOB WARNER, SPAIN PARK: The senior clocked 16:57.85 to capture the boys’ varsity Top 10 race at the Spain Park Classic held at Hoover’s Veterans Park. Wetumpka senior Cory Anthony was second with a 17:17.69 time in the race that featured 294 participants. Hoover captured the team championship with 67 points, and Montgomery Catholic was second with 102.
BRADLEY SCHIMIDT, BAYSIDE ACADEMY: Edged T.R. Miller runner Rider Jernigan by nine seconds to win the Battle of the Bay varsity boys’ race held at Loxley Municipal Park last weekend. Schmidt clocked 18:06.57 and Jernigan had a time of 18:15.03 in the field of 148 participants. Bayside, the host school, finished second overall with 62 points. UMS-Wright was third with 63. Pensacola Christian won the team title with 53 points.
SAM MOULTRIE, GUNTERSVILLE: The Wildcats senior crossed the finish line with a time of 16:18.77 to win the Class 5A-7A division race championship at the Fairfield Invitational. Cullman senior Will Thompson and junior Edgar Medina finished 2-3 with time of 16:32.68 and 17:13.49, respectively, in the race that totaled 97 participants. The Bearcats posted 35 points to win the team championship over runner-up Springville (59).
DAVIS HOLDBROOKS, WINFIELD: The Pirates’ senior runner won the Class 1A-4A division race at the Fairview Invitational with a time of 17:15.26. DAR’s Kyle Saylor finished second in the 173-participant field with a 17:48.33 time. White Plains won the team championship with 55 points. Senior Jake Moore and junior Luke Larson finished fifth and seventh, respectively, for White Plains.
JEAN PIERRE LeROUX, BOB JONES: Captured the Clements Invitational with a 16:33.75 time at the competition held at Blue Springs course near Athens. The junior edged two Lawrence County runners, freshman Steele Joiner (16:55.73) and senior Blake Terry (16:58.71), who finished 2-3, respectively. No other runner in the field of 186 participants cracked the 17-minute mark. Bob Jones won the team competition with 58 points and Lawrence County was second with 85.
HUNTER HARWELL, MOUNTAIN BROOK: The Spartans’ senior had the top time as Mountain Brook beat Hewitt-Trussville 21-37 in a dual match held at Trussville last week. He clocked 17:12.40 and Hewitt sophomore Aaron Himes was second with a 17:39.47 time. Eighty runners competed for the two teams with the top five finishers for each team counting in the team scoring.

GIRLS
AMARIS TYYNISMAA, MONTGOMERY CATHOLIC: The senior beat a field of 215 runners with a time of 18:49.21 to win the Spain Park Cross Country Classic varsity girls’ Top 10 featured race at a meet held Sept. 15 at Hoover’s Veterans Park. Teammate Lily Bachi, a freshman, was second at 20:06.09. Catholic won the team title as well with 43 points, and Hoover was second with 59.
SAMANTHA ROGERS, AUBURN: Clocked 19:45.49 to capture first place at the Enterprise Invitational Classic and helped the Lady Tigers win the event with a perfect score of 15. Central-Phenix City was second with 79 points and Enterprise third with 86. Auburn teammates Harper McGowan, Hallie Stewart, Sarah Parnell, Sara Pacer, Sangie Lincoln-Velez and Elizabeth Nist all finished in order behind Rogers to take the top seven places. Only the first five figured in the team scoring, however. McGowan had a 20:04.80 time, Stewart crossed 20:24.56 and the rest all completed the race with times falling below 20:48.
JULIANNE HILL, MADISON ACADEMY: The senior won the 5,000-meter title in the Class 1A/4A Division clocking 20:25.25 to win by 1:21over runner-up Haley Hughes of DAR. St. Bernard won the team crown with 85 points in the race that included a field of 149 runners.
OLIVIA BLACKMON, T.R. MILLER: Won the girls’ race of the Battle of the Bay Invitational held at Loxley Municipal Park with a time of 21:33.52 to beat the field of 123 runners. UMS-Wright’s Brenda Ellis was second clocking 22:57.77. The Tigers won the team competition with 37 points. UMS-Wright had 66 points to finish second in the 12-team field.
BIJOU PHILLIPS, GOOD HOPE: The ninth grader clocked 20:59.54 to beat a field of 101 participants for the Fairview Invitational Class 1A-4A division championship. DAR sophomore Elizabeth Stone Butler and senior Haley Hughes finished second and third respectively for the Patriots with times of 21:22.93 and 21:34.95, respectively. Brindlee Mountain placed three runners in the top 12 to claim the team title with 58 points. St. Bernard was second with 75.
EMILY DANIEL, CLEMENTS: The junior led Lawrence County to the Clements Invitational title with a 19:34.99 time to finish first in the field of 113 runners. The meet was held at the Blue Springs course near Athens. West Limestone juniorCassidy Winter was second clocking 20:30.39. The Red Devils won the team title with 42 points. Deshler was runner-up in the team competition with 137 points.
LILY HULSEY, MOUNTAIN BROOK: The Spartans’ junior finished first with a 21:01.00 time as Mountain Brook downed Hewitt-Trussville 21-34 in a dual match held at Trussville last week. Hewitt sophomore Amelia Brady was second at 21:45.26. A total of 46 runners competed for the two teams with the top five finishers for each team counting in the team scoring.
