Autism and Physical Therapy

Puzzle design awareness ribbon with blue background April is Autism Awareness Month, encorerehab.com

How can a Physical Therapist help children with an autism diagnosis?

“Physical therapists can work with your child, family, and educational team to help your child:

  • Improve participation in daily routines at home and school
  • Acquire new motor skills
  • Develop better coordination and a more stable posture
  • Improve reciprocal play skills, such as throwing and catching a ball with another person
  • Develop motor imitation skills (seeing another person perform an action and then copying that action)
  • Increase fitness and stamina

“A physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your child that will typically include a health and developmental history and assessment of:

  • Postural strength and control
  • Functional mobility (eg, walking and running)
  • Body and safety awareness
  • Coordination
  • Play skills
  • Interests and motivators
  • Ability to change between different activities
  • Strengths and challenges in making large body movements, such as jumping, hopping, pedaling a tricycle or bicycle, and skipping
  • Participation in daily routines in the home, community, and school

“Your physical therapist will work with you to develop goals to help your child participate as fully as possible in daily routines at home, in the community, and at school. Your physical therapist will then develop a comprehensive plan to meet your child’s, and your whole family’s needs. No “standard” treatment exists for children with ASD (Austism Spectrum Disorder). Each child’s challenges and goals are different. Your physical therapist will design an individual program to meet the strengths and needs of your child. The therapist will work with you to monitor how your child progresses, and collect data to make sure that the treatment plan is leading to positive outcomes for your child.”**

There are many people who struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Here is an excerpt from the article, “10 Simple Adjustments to Relieve RA Hand Pain”, that could help you resume your daily activities that RA was keeping you from.

How an Occupational Therapist Can Help –

“According to an analysis of numerous research studies published by the Cochrane Collaboration, there’s a lot of evidence that working with an occupational therapist when you have RA can help you use your hands for everyday tasks more efficiently and with less pain. The occupational therapist’s goal is to ensure that you can participate in any activity you want while still protecting your joints and getting hand pain relief.

For starters, an occupational therapist teaches people with RA about disease self-management, Dodge says – offering instruction on joint protection techniques, how to use assistive devices, how to conserve your energy, and exercises that…

Encore RehabilitationCorporate Office Reception for visiting Chinese Medical Professionals-Decatur, Alabama

The Corporate Offices of Encore Rehabilitation recently hosted medical professionals from China with a tour and reception. One highlight of the evening was a presentation given by Encore Rehabilitation President Paul Henderson and Vice-President Paige Plash on the history and philosophy of Encore.

Another highlight was an informative talk given by Dr. Jun Hu, Assistant Dean at Shanghai University College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Hu is passionate about providing quality rehab care in his country, including expanding the use of Physical Therapy.

There are currently about 1,700 Physical Therapists in China. By the year 2020, China will have over 400 million people over the age of 60, many of which will need rehab.  The use of Physical Therapy is growing in China as they look to “westernize” rehab services. This group of medical professionals was touring Encore facilities to learn more about how Physical Therapy may be used for rehab care.

Encore Rehabilitation is the largest privately owned rehabilitation company in the Southeast United States, offering Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy as well as  Industrial Rehab, Sports Medicine, and Athletic Training services. Encore has been serving families and communities for over 35 years.

Our display of jersey boxes and ceiling tiles continues to expand at Encore Rehabilitation-Tuscaloosa! We love supporting our local schools and athletes!

Our ceiling tiles represent our area elementary, middle and high schools with their names and mascots. Our jersey boxes proudly display the uniforms of former athlete-patients. We look forward to growing our collection even more in upcoming months! We’ll keep you posted!
