Arab Senior Megan Schwarze Wins Two Races
In 4 Days to Grab AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight


MONTGOMERY – Senior Megan Schwarze of Arab High School captured first place at two cross country meets – over a span of just four days — to grab the AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight this week.
    Schwarze, who finished third in 3,200 meters and second in the 1,600 race at the AHSAA Class 5A Outdoor State Track Championships in Gulf Shores last May, won the 5A-7A Division title at the Randolph Cross Country Classic championships held Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  She also won the 5A-7A division race of the Fairview Invitational the previous Saturday, clocking 22:22.59 to finish first in a field of 67 participants.
She ran the 5,000-meter course at UAH in 19:31.5 to beat a field of 121 runners with Vestavia Hills freshmen runners Crawford West, Katy Lambert and Sarah Comer finishing in the next three spots with times of 20:19.42, 20:25.34 and 20:27.34, respectively. The Rebels swept the team competition totaling 29 points.
Running at the Cullman County race, Schwarze edged Alexandria’s Abby Nunnelly, who had a time of 20:53.13, to win the event. The Arab girls’ team, coached by her dad James Schwarze, finish second with 35 points. Cullman, the winner with 33, was paced by sophomore Bernada Tizapa and junior Della Kelly, who crossed the finish line at Fairview 3-4 with times of 21:22.15 and 21:23.34, respectively.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Ethan Strand of Vestavia Hills High School had the fastest time of the week placing first in a field of 237 runners to capture the individual Class 5A-7A championship at the Randolph Cross Country Classic held at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  Strand clocked 15:38.10 over the 5,000-meter course to edge senior teammate Bryce Hutchinson, who had a time of 16:06.89. The Rebels won the team crown with 33 points.
Thanks to results compiled by Express Timing and Alabama Runners, other top performances reported over the week included:

BOYS
SILAS FRANKLIN, SMITHS STATION: Won the Enterprise Wildcat Classic held at Enterprise with a winning time of 16:32.50 for the Panthers in the featured “A” race. Evan Crawford of the host Wildcats was second at 17:05.72. Smiths Station had five runners in the top 13 of the 89-participant field to claim the team title with 35 points. Auburn was second just one point behind with 36, and Enterprise third with 51.
AARON BROWN, HANCEVILLE: Won the Class 1A-4A division of the Randolph Cross Country Classic at the University of Alabama-Huntsville with a winning time of 17:05.26. The senior edged out Hatton senior Kagen Sutton, who finished second at 17:09.59 in the race that featured 257 runners. The top 10 runners all came from different schools. DAR won the team title with 118 points.
JACOB WARNER, SPAIN PARK: The senior clocked 16:57.85 to capture the boys’ varsity Top 10 race at the Spain Park Classic held at Hoover’s Veterans Park. Wetumpka senior Cory Anthony was second with a 17:17.69 time in the race that featured 294 participants.  Hoover captured the team championship with 67 points, and Montgomery Catholic was second with 102.
BRADLEY SCHIMIDT, BAYSIDE ACADEMY: Edged T.R. Miller runner Rider Jernigan by nine seconds to win the Battle of the Bay varsity boys’ race held at Loxley Municipal Park last weekend. Schmidt clocked 18:06.57 and Jernigan had a time of 18:15.03 in the field of 148 participants.  Bayside, the host school, finished second overall with 62 points. UMS-Wright was third with 63. Pensacola Christian won the team title with 53 points.
SAM MOULTRIE, GUNTERSVILLE: The Wildcats senior crossed the finish line with a time of 16:18.77 to win the Class 5A-7A division race championship at the Fairfield Invitational. Cullman senior Will Thompson and junior Edgar Medina finished 2-3 with time of 16:32.68 and 17:13.49, respectively, in the race that totaled 97 participants. The Bearcats posted 35 points to win the team championship over runner-up Springville (59).
DAVIS HOLDBROOKS, WINFIELD: The Pirates’ senior runner won the Class 1A-4A division race at the Fairview Invitational with a time of 17:15.26. DAR’s Kyle Saylor finished second in the 173-participant field with a 17:48.33 time. White Plains won the team championship with 55 points. Senior Jake Moore and junior Luke Larson finished fifth and seventh, respectively, for White Plains.
JEAN PIERRE LeROUX, BOB JONES: Captured the Clements Invitational with a 16:33.75 time at the competition held at Blue Springs course near Athens. The junior edged two Lawrence County runners, freshman Steele Joiner (16:55.73) and senior Blake Terry (16:58.71), who finished 2-3, respectively. No other runner in the field of 186 participants cracked the 17-minute mark. Bob Jones won the team competition with 58 points and Lawrence County was second with 85.
HUNTER HARWELL, MOUNTAIN BROOK: The Spartans’ senior had the top time as Mountain Brook beat Hewitt-Trussville 21-37 in a dual match held at Trussville last week. He clocked 17:12.40 and Hewitt sophomore Aaron Himes was second with a 17:39.47 time.  Eighty runners competed for the two teams with the top five finishers for each team counting in the team scoring.

GIRLS
AMARIS TYYNISMAA, MONTGOMERY CATHOLIC: The senior beat a field of 215 runners with a time of 18:49.21 to win the Spain Park Cross Country Classic varsity girls’ Top 10 featured race at a meet held Sept. 15 at Hoover’s Veterans Park. Teammate Lily Bachi, a freshman, was second at 20:06.09. Catholic won the team title as well with 43 points, and Hoover was second with 59.
SAMANTHA ROGERS, AUBURN: Clocked 19:45.49 to capture first place at the Enterprise Invitational Classic and helped the Lady Tigers win the event with a perfect score of 15. Central-Phenix City was second with 79 points and Enterprise third with 86. Auburn teammates Harper McGowan, Hallie Stewart, Sarah Parnell, Sara Pacer, Sangie Lincoln-Velez and Elizabeth Nist all finished in order behind Rogers to take the top seven places. Only the first five figured in the team scoring, however. McGowan had a 20:04.80 time, Stewart crossed 20:24.56 and the rest all completed the race with times falling below 20:48.
JULIANNE HILL, MADISON ACADEMY: The senior won the 5,000-meter title in the Class 1A/4A Division clocking 20:25.25 to win by 1:21over runner-up Haley Hughes of DAR. St. Bernard won the team crown with 85 points in the race that included a field of 149 runners.
OLIVIA BLACKMON, T.R. MILLER: Won the girls’ race of the Battle of the Bay Invitational held at Loxley Municipal Park with a time of 21:33.52 to beat the field of 123 runners. UMS-Wright’s Brenda Ellis was second clocking 22:57.77.  The Tigers won the team competition with 37 points. UMS-Wright had 66 points to finish second in the 12-team field.
BIJOU PHILLIPS, GOOD HOPE: The ninth grader clocked 20:59.54 to beat a field of 101 participants for the Fairview Invitational Class 1A-4A division championship. DAR sophomore Elizabeth Stone Butler and senior Haley Hughes finished second and third respectively for the Patriots with times of 21:22.93 and 21:34.95, respectively. Brindlee Mountain placed three runners in the top 12 to claim the team title with 58 points. St. Bernard was second with 75.
EMILY DANIEL, CLEMENTS: The junior led Lawrence County to the Clements Invitational title with a 19:34.99 time to finish first in the field of 113 runners. The meet was held at the Blue Springs course near Athens. West Limestone juniorCassidy Winter was second clocking 20:30.39. The Red Devils won the team title with 42 points. Deshler was runner-up in the team competition with 137 points.
LILY HULSEY, MOUNTAIN BROOK: The Spartans’ junior finished first with a 21:01.00 time as Mountain Brook downed Hewitt-Trussville 21-34 in a dual match held at Trussville last week. Hewitt sophomore Amelia Brady was second at 21:45.26. A total of 46 runners competed for the two teams with the top five finishers for each team counting in the team scoring.

Kyle is a Senior at Hamilton High School where he plays Football for the Aggies. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career with HVAC (heating and cooling). Kyle is the son of Marsha Knight.

AHSAA Cross Country Update – Sept. 13, 2018

Photo Finish at Etowah County Trail Invitational Grabs AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight for Week 3

MONTGOMERY – The 5,000-meter championship race at the Etowah County Trail Invitational high school boys’ cross country competition held at Noccalula Falls Course near Gadsden may have been a long-distance race. However, it came down to a photo finish last week when Briarwood Christian sophomore Trent Malloy nipped senior Chance Cofield of Albertville by just 27/100ths of a second to win the individual title.
Malloy clocked 18:31.25 to beat Cofield, who crossed the finish line at 18:31.52 to share the AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight for week three of the AHSAA prep cross country season.
The pair beat a field that totaled just over 200 runners.  Albertville, coached by Logan Cornett, took first place with 39 points and Pleasant Valley was second with 75 points. Briarwood is coached by Aaron Margene.
   The girls’ race was won by Abby Nunnelly, a 5-foot senior for Alexandria. She crossed the finish line at 22:26.11 in another close finish to nip runner-up Maddie Jackson of Fort Payne by 25 seconds. Jackson, a freshman, clocked 22:52.71 to help the Wildcats claim the team title with 24 points. Teammates Anahi Barboza, Aylin Vega, Mollie Sanderson and Abigail Vega were close behind at third, fourth, sixth and ninth, respectively. Barboza is an eighth grader, Anahi Vega, a sophomore, and Abigail Vega and Sanderson freshmen for Coach Ashley Jackson’s team. Pleasant Valley finished second with 78 points.

In other cross country highlights reported from last week’s action:

BOYS
WILL STONE, HOMEWOOD: The Patriots senior won the large-school division title at the 18th annual Chickasaw Trails Invitational meet held at Oakville Indian Mounds Park with a winning time of 15:37.19 in the 5,000-meter race. Mountain Brook senior Hunter Harwell was second crossing the finish line at 15:50.25. Both times were the fastest of the week for Alabama prep runners.  Huntsville totaled 101 points to win the meet, one of the largest in the state annually in the regular season, that had 274 boys’ participants in the large-division race.  Vestavia Hills had 127 points to finish second out of 39 schools participating, and Homewood was third with 140.
NICK SIEDERS, UNIVERSITY SCHOOL (TN): Ran 16:52.11 to win the small-school division of the 18th annual Chickasaw Trails Invitational meet at Oakville Indian Mounds Park. He helped his school from Nashville finished second behind winner Tupelo Christian (MS), which won with 76 points. University School had 79 and St. John Paul II Catholic of Huntsville was third with 80 points. Noah Flynn of St. John Paul II was third with a time of 17:07.03. The field included 33 schools and 297 runners.
GRAHAM BIANCHI, SPRINGVILLE: Helped the Tigers win the team title at the St. Clair County Invitational at Odenville with a winning time of 17:54.94 in the race that included 99 runners. John Niiler of Northridge was second at 18:07.59. Springville had 36 points and runner-up Stanhope Elmore had 90 among the nine teams participating.
DUSTYN LEWIS, GRISSOM: Clocked 10:10.99 to win the featured 2-mile race at the Bearcat 2-Mile Meet. Carson Levario-Slaten of Hartselle finished five seconds back to take second place in the field of 95 runners. Grissom won the team title with 50 points, and Cullman was second with 62.

 

GIRLS
McKENZIE HOGUE, THOMPSON: The Warriors senior won the large-school division race of the 18th annual Chickasaw Trails Invitational at Oakville Indian Mounds Park with a winning time of 18:31.28 in the 5,000-meter race. Sophomore Presley Miles of Saint James was second with a 19:15.04 time. The race included 233 participants representing 32 schools. Mountain Brook won the team title with 78 points, and Brentwood (TN) was second with 92.
ISABELLA ROWLAND, MONTGOMERY ACADEMY: The Eagles senior ran 20:47.37 to beat the field of 202 runners in the small-school division of the 18th Chickasaw Trails Invitational at Oakville. Junior Cassidy Winter of West Limestone was second with a 20:59.10 finish. St. John Paul II Catholic won the team crown with 106 points, and Montgomery Academy was second with 120. A total of 21 teams competed in the race.
MEGHIAN McCARTHY, ASHVILLE: She was the first runner to cross the finish line, clocking 22:29.51, and the Bulldogs scored 34 points to claim the title of the St. Clair County Invitational held at Odenville. Kathleen McCARTHY was second at 23:24.41, followed by St. Clair County teammates Taylor Knight and Emma Thompson, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the race of 45 participants. Northridge took second place with 52 points.

Congratulations to Meagan McIntyre! She has been selected Athlete of the Month for Encore Rehabilitation-Fayette!

Meagan is a Senior at Fayette County High School where she plays softball for the Tigers and has earned the “Best Hustle” award. Her post-graduation plans include pursuing a radiology degree. In her spare time she likes to fish, hunt, play softball, and spend time with her dog.

Meagan is the daughter of Mea Haines and Terry McIntyre.

Homewood’s Will Stone Turns in Fastest 5K Time of The Season to Claim AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight

MONTGOMERY – Senior cross country runner Will Stone of Homewood High School picked up this season right where he left off in 2017. Stone clocked 15:32.85 in the Brooks/Memphis Twilight Cross Country Championships last weekend to finish second among the 402 varsity boys’ participants. Davis Bove of Centennial (TN) won the championship with a 15:24.91 time. Homewood finished eighth in the 52-team field.
Stone’s effort is the fastest 5,000-meter time of any AHSAA runner this season and earned him the AHSAA Cross Country Spotlight for the past week. Last year’s boys’ state prep runner of the year clocked 15:46.2 to win the Class 6A state championship boys’ individual title and run the state’s fast time (15:22.32) in 2017 at the Jesse Owens Classic. Just two weeks into the season he has bettered his state championship time by 14 seconds and is just 10 seconds behind his best time of last season.
Homewood, coached by Josh Donaldson, finished sixth in the girls’ competition at Memphis with Patriots junior Lainey Phelps finishing fourth in the varsity girls’ division clocking 18:50.76 – 12 seconds off the winning pace of Henry County (TN) runner Dinah Winders. The girls’ race included 43 schools and 344 runners.
In other top performances reported from last week’s action:

BOYS
SAM MOULTRIE, GUNTERSVILLE: The junior won the Gold Division at the second annual Huntsville Panther Prowl Cross Country Invitational 5,000-meter race clocking 16:25.57. Runner-up Hayden Judge of Scottsboro ran a 16:32.07 time. Huntsville captured the team title with 32 points.
JACOB WARNER, SPAIN PARK: Captured first place in the 12th annual Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational at Choccolocca Park with a winning time of 16:39.92. Oak Mountain’s duo of Hansen McCown and Josh Barrett finished 2-3 with times of 17:05.26 and 17:07.88 in the field 216 runners. The Eagles won the team competition with 28 points. Southside-Gadsden was second with 83.
MYLES STOOTS, FAITH ACADEMY: Finished third in the Mobile Challenge of Champions Cross Country Championships with a time of 16:47.45. He was five seconds off the pace of Brother Martin runner Cade Litolff (16:42.54). Brother Martin of New Orleans won the team title with 60 points and Baker was second with 74. A total of 75 runners participated.
STEELE JOINER, LAWRENCE COUNTY: The Red Devils’ freshman turned in a 16:58.42 time to beat the 139-runner field in the 4A/7A division race at the Brooks Invitational at Florence’s McFarland Park. Raleigh Stamps of Rogers was second at 17:04.01.
CARSON GRAVES, HATTON: The freshman won the 1A/3A boys’ race at the Brooks Invitational at Florence’s McFarland Park running 17:23.24 to finish first. Lauderdale County’s Colby Corum, a sophomore, was second with a 17:34.92 time.
JOSEPH PERRY, UMS-WRIGHT: Clocked 17:23.53 to finish first in the field of 226 runners competing in the Open Division of the Mobile Challenge of Champions event at Mobile. St. Paul’s Episcopal, led by runner-up John Michael Romanos, placed four runners in a row behind Perryto win the team title with 24 points. Romanos crossed the finish line at 17:31.84.
GRAHAM BIANCHI, SPRINGVILLE: Ran 17:54.94 to win the St. Clair County Invitational race championship as the Tigers won the team title with 36 points. Teammate Peyton Young was third.
HUNTER HARWELL, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Won the featured two-mile race at the Warrior Challenge at Alabaster’s Veterans Park with a winning time of 10:21.78. Thompson’s Jace Jones was second at 10:29.77. Mountain Brook won the team title with 30 points. The race had a field of 143 runners. Harwell’s time was the fastest two-mile performance of the season in the AHSAA thus far in 2018.

GIRLS
MILES PRESLEY, SAINT JAMES: Captured first place for the second straight week in a major event with a winning time of 18:23.81 in the girls’ division of the 12th annual Waffle House/Yellow Jacket Invitational at Choccolocca Park. Spain Park’s Mackenzie Culpepper was second at 20:05.13. Fort Payne posted 38 points and Oak Mountain 46 to finish 1-2 among the 14 teams and 153 runners participating.
BAILEY LANSDOWN, FAITH ACADEMY: Finished second to Brooklyn Biancamano of Long Beach (MS) High School in the Mobile Challenge of Champions Invitational division. Lansdown posted a time of 19:56.23 in the field of 67 runners. Biancamano won with an 18:42.62 time.Leslie Baxter of Baker was fourth to help the Hornets win the team title with 49 points.
ABBEY WEITENBECK, HUNTSVILLE: Clocked 20:13.98 to finish second in the second annual Huntsville Panther Prowl Invitational cross country race at Sharon Johnson Park. Sadie Cook of Independence (TN)   was first in the field of 77 runners in the Gold Division at 19:39.96. Independence won the team title with 44 points and Scottsboro was second with 72.
SAVANNAH WILLIAMS, LAWRENCE COUNTY: The Red Devils’ eighth grader beat the field of 79 runners at the Brooks Invitational at Florence’s McFarland Park with a time of 19:55.47. Teammate Emily Daniel was second at 20:03.95.
KASEY EZEKIEL, COLBERT HEIGHTS: The junior runner won the Brooks Invitational 1A/3A title clocking 22:06.97 in the field of 58 runners. Ally Amerson of Hatton was second at 22:15.17.
ABIGAIL SADLER, ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL: Won the Mobile Challenge of Champions Open Division race with a time of 22:28.45. Mary Montgomery finished first with 64 points to beat the field of 14 teams and 131 runners that participated in the Open race.
MEGHAN McCARTHY, ASHVILLE: Finished first in the St. Clair County Invitational with a winning time of 22:29.51. Teammates Kathleen McCarthy, Taylor Knight and Emma Thompson crossed at 2-3-4 as the Bulldogs won the team title with 34 points. Northridge was second with 52.
AMARIS TYYNISMAA, MONTGOMERY CATHOLIC: Won the two-mile race at the Warrior Challenge at Alabaster with a winning time of 11:55.52. Thompson’s McKenzie Hogue was second clocking 12:04.95. Mountain Brook won the team title with 30 points, and Montgomery Catholic was second with 44. A total of 125 runners competed in the featured race at Veterans Park.
